PRESS RELEASE : “A Fantastic Weekend for the 41rst Edition of the Gatineau Loppet”

Gatineau, February 17, 2019 – Day two of the Gatineau Loppet’s 41st edition competitions also started under a brilliant sunshine at École secondaire Mont-Bleu. All participants, from expert to beginner, were eager to hit the trails of Gatineau Park for the free technique and snowshoe races. This year again, the 51 km free technique, which started from P17 in the La Pêche Munipality, was a linear race.

In addition, close to 130 children, accompanied by their parents, took part in the Mini Sport Échange Outaouais race, a non-timed race with entertainment, music, hot chocolate and marshmallow roasting.

OVERVIEW

After everything was said and done, the 41st edition of the Gatineau Loppet attracted close to 2,200 participants from 20 countries over the weekend. Gatineau Loppet President Jean-François Rochefort was all smiles at the closing event. “It was a fantastic weekend for the Gatineau Loppet. Everything from temperatures to the snow conditions, the number of participants and their energy, the activties for the whole family were simply perfect. In 41 years, the Gatineau Loppet has never been cancelled, to the delight of the international clientele that travels every year to Canada for this competition. We are extremely proud of the outcome of this year’s edition of the Gatineau Loppet.”

Highlights of this 41st edition:

  • The two linear races were a hit, with more than 850 skiers in total registered.
  • Second year of the freestyle linear race from P17 in the la pêche municipality was a great success.
  • OUR LOCAL SKIER ANDY SHIELDS won Saturday’s 51 km classic style and Sunday’s 51 km freestyle.
  • Several local VIPs took part in the different races, including Norway Ambassador to Canada, Ann Kari Hensen Ovind, Finland’s Ambassador Vesa Lehtonen, Chelsea Municipal Councillor Pierre Guénard and Tobi Nussbaum the Chief Executive Officer of the National Capital Commission (NCC).
  • Lac Philippe covered bridge crossing.
  • Entertainment along the routes.
  • Close to 2,200 skiers from close 20 countries took part in the 41st edition under brilliant sunshine.
